COVID RELIEF
Add this option to lessen the impact of COVID-19 on the people who make our clothes.
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting lives all over the globe, but is especially impacting garment workers. Many are working in crowded factories without sufficient protections in place. Not only is their health at risk, but so is their livelihood if they are sent home without pay.
The fashion industry as we know it wouldn’t exist without the contribution of approximately 70 million workers, many of whom have no financial or legal security.
And yet, in March 2020 many brands and retailers cancelled (or “held”) orders and demanded retroactive price reductions for orders that were already in transit, completed or in the production process. In Bangladesh for example, (the second-largest garment industry in the world behind China), over a million garment workers have been fired or furloughed during this health crisis because suppliers could not afford to pay them.
The PayUp movement was formed in response to these disastrous decisions, and was able to successfully pressure brands to honour their commitments and pay for the work.
See if the brands you shop from have chosen to act responsibly and honour their commitments to their suppliers here.
